Green industry will be the direction of manufacturing development

Recently, UL's Supply Chain and Sustainability Business Unit held a global tour of sustainable development in Guangzhou in China. During this period, UL-related experts and participants interpreted sustainable development in three major industries: automotive, building materials, and electronics. The latest trends and business opportunities in the sector propose that improving the production capacity of green products will become the future direction of manufacturing.

According to relevant experts, green development represents the direction of future global development and has also become the focus of international cooperation and competition. At the end of 2008, the UN Environment Programme proposed the Green New Initiative and called on all governments to pay attention to the important role of green investment in economic recovery. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012 also listed green economy as one of its themes, focusing on sustainable development and green economy in the context of poverty eradication. Both developed countries and emerging markets in the world have made the development of a green economy a breakthrough in achieving growth.

As one of the fastest growing countries in the world economy, environmental issues have now become one of the serious challenges facing China's socio-economic development. This problem has become increasingly prominent and expanding, which has affected the regional ecological security and sustainable development. In this context, China's promotion of green manufacturing has received strong support from policies and industry. Related companies and manufacturers have continuously adjusted their industrial structure and promoted green development, recycling development, and low-carbon development. At the same time, all sectors of society have been constantly calling for the promotion of green consumption, which in turn has driven the transformation of the entire industrial chain to green production.

From the perspective of consumers, more and more consumers support the sustainability of products. According to the survey, 80% of consumers believe that they have purchased at least one sustainable product; they focus on healthy and sustainable life. The purchasing power on the way is rising and has exceeded 300 billion U.S. dollars. Fifty-five percent of consumers from 60 countries have shown that they are willing to pay more to purchase products or services from companies that are committed to good social and environmental impact. In the consumer electronics sector, 75% of consumers are looking for greener electronics and home appliances. In the automotive industry, 28% of consumers are looking for hybrid, electric, or other types of environmentally friendly cars. In the construction industry, the consumption of green building products in the global market is expected to double by 2020, from US$116 billion in 2013 to US$ 254 billion.

In this activity, UL related experts stated that in order to ensure that they maintain a competitive advantage and a leading position in the market, related companies and manufacturers should adopt a complete set of solutions, from product design planning to marketing, from testing certification to Consulting services covering all aspects of the process.

It is understood that the US Supply Chain and Sustainable Development Division of UL Corporation has been continuously promoting green environmental protection services in China. Its services include indoor air quality (IAQ) services, independent environmental product certification (ECV), and sustainable products. Certification (SPC), Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), etc. With its extensive experience in testing and certification and comprehensive service capabilities, it actively promotes related industries to achieve “green value” and helps consumers find truly “environmentally friendly products”. Currently, the UL Supply Chain and Sustainability Division has a total of 68 expert contact centers and professional laboratories worldwide, providing corresponding testing and certification services for more than 100 countries. At the same time, there is an expert contact center in Beijing and a laboratory in Nansha District, Guangzhou. According to Ms. Lisa Meier, Vice President of UL and General Manager of the Environment Division, in order to continuously promote the sustainable development of the Chinese market, UL has created a localized service team and an advanced environmental testing laboratory to help Chinese manufacturers continuously improve the production capacity of green products. In the future, UL will continue to play a leading role in environmental protection and green consumption, help enterprises enhance green competitiveness, promote the healthy and sustainable development of green environmental protection business in China, and promote the social form of sustainable development.

During the exhibition, UL also set up a sub-forum on in-vehicle air quality testing and standards, sharing the expertise of UL in chemical release, and working with auto manufacturers to provide a safer interior air environment for car manufacturers. Efforts in the area of continuous development provide technical assistance and support.
