The chief engineer reveals the construction of the nest: each weld is engraved with the name of the welder

“Those who stood by the nesting site and stood on the road watching the bird's nest passers-by were most touched by me. As builders, I think we must pay attention to these people.” - Beijing Urban Construction Group National Stadium Project Li Jiulin, the chief engineer of the contracting department, interviewed Li Jiulin. He simply agreed neatly. There was only one request, either early in the morning or late, because he had to leave the whole time for the nest in the closing stage.

On December 27, 2007, Beijing came cold and curled up in a coat and saw the 39-year-old chief. I still wondered what the "Bird's Nest", which was viewed by billions of people, meant to him, and inadvertently saw him. On the mobile phone, the standby screen above is not his lovely daughter, not the seductive landscape. It was actually the Bird's Nest.

More than three years around the "home"

In the near future on December 27, 2007, the simple three-story steel house next to the Bird's Nest site was under the big character of "Beijing Urban Construction Group's construction of the Bird's Nest Project." Li Jiulin rushed back from the construction site and had not had time to remove the helmet. People are ordinary, wearing glasses and brown jackets.

"Every day, Li Jiulin must walk around the site of the Bird's Nest. It is over 1,000 days in more than 1,000 days." Cheng Chenghua, deputy secretary of the party committee of Beijing Urban Construction Group, commented on his subordinates. In fact, since the Bird Nest design drawings were picked up in 2003, Li Jiulin’s “home” has settled on the edge of the bird's nest in more than three years.

Go into the "Bird's Nest" Chief Engineer's office - a small room on the second floor of the Shelter. A small blue bed hidden behind the desk was filled with architectural books. "I'm sleeping here now." Li Jiulin pointed to a yellow couch beside him, with a quilt over it, no pillows, and only a small cushion.

This can only be seen as a temporary "bed", but it is Li Jiulin's return of half the night of 365 days a year. Picking up the drawings of the nest for the first time in 2003, he "settles his house" around the bird's nest. "In the construction site, there are several places that have been dumped. The nests occupy a compact area. Where are we to take the simple houses?" According to regulations, the management team of the Urban Construction Group's Nest Project has 30 white classes and 15 night shifts every month. For more than three years, Li Jiulin has spent half of the night in the nest, “day and night add up and stay in the Bird’s Nest than at home. It's a lot of time."

Now it is the Bird's Nest "beautician"

The bird's nest has passed the difficult stage of structural engineering, but the finishing work still leaves Li Jiulin unburdened. Now, he has become a "beautician" in the Bird's Nest.

Unlike other buildings, 80% of the pillars in the Bird's Nest are "repeated", and the intersections and lines between lines are very complicated. The pillars and beams of “歪” are interspersed into each other, and the intersection line is passed through, or it is broken at the intersection position. It is difficult to grasp during construction, and it needs to be adjusted later. "What we are doing now is a detailed beautification."

Both hope the opening ceremony and "fear" the opening ceremony

The closing and dismounting of the Bird's Nest has been written in many versions of the story. Li Jiulin is not willing to talk about the "spiritual moments" of these nests in depth.

“We have gained a lot of rewards for building construction, but from a professional point of view, the bird's nest is really good or bad, and we have to watch the audience uncomfortable, the athletes can not get good results, the sound effect is good or bad. All the details depend on everyone. Come to experience.” In the eyes of Li Jiulin, the best test for the bird's nest is to open the Olympic Games. The audience feels that the bird's nest is very good. "For example, although it was midsummer in August, the audience would make a thumbs-up. The natural ventilation of the nest is cool, not a steamer."

"In the opening days, we hoped that it will come early. At the same time, there is also a bit of stress in my heart."

Builder's eyes

"The nest is engraved with the welder's name"

Narrator: Li Jiulin

If you have the opportunity to look closely, you can see the welder's name on each side of the weld in the nest.

At that time, excellent welders from all parts of the country, including the Urban Construction Group, gathered a total of more than 1,000 people. After training, they were selected as excellent and excellent candidates, and more than 450 were selected, and training certificates were required to enter the bird nest site.

The location of the nest welding is complicated. In the past, we could adjust the position of the components to make the welders more comfortable. For example, if the top welder turned over the components, they would be comfortable. However, the components of the bird's nest are particularly large and complex. They can only rely on workers to adjust their posture and weld in a narrow space for a long time.

Most of the time in the welding of the nests in the summer, the steel plate should be heated to 150 degrees or more. To ensure the welding quality, we must wear thick clothes and bear high temperature baking during the summer when we wear short-sleeved shirts. And you think, if you weld upside, there will be welding slag falling.

Welding process is not allowed to be interrupted, otherwise there may be cracks, slag inclusions and other issues, the longest welding process to reach 17 hours, of course, we can replace. In any case, this is a challenge to the welder's skills, physical strength, and sense of responsibility.

At the peak of welding, we have thousands of welders on the construction site. They, plus 7,000 concrete workers. The nest is really built on their hands.

Every weld in the Bird’s Nest is engraved with the name of a welder on the edge. In this way, hundreds of ordinary welders have left their own tiny traces in this world-renowned Olympic project - perhaps The public has no chance to see it, but it will never wear it out.

From the day of Beijing’s successful bid for the Olympic Games to the opening ceremony of August 8, 2008, the period full of passion and dreams, creation and construction, wisdom and hardship will be engraved in the lives of countless builders; at the same time, they themselves It is also changing history.

What is recorded here is just the story of two people - the two most representative buildings of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Two of the builders who are eager to turn drawings into reality. Behind them are numerous people who have left their names and have no name, who have contributed wisdom, effort, and labor. Maybe many people only have vague figures, but please, let us cast the most respectful attention. Wang Hailiang

Builders and dialogue

Reporter: With the approaching of the Olympics, visitors to the Bird's Nest viewing platform are endless. What are your thoughts on such concerns?

Li Jiulin: As builders, we will say in private that we must be able to afford the Bird’s Nest and deserve the attention of others. This kind of concern, in addition to what you said on the observation deck, I feel even more touched by those who have moved around on the construction site, or on the roads on the roads of Malaysia, and looked at their necks. Those people are most touched by us.

Reporter: Do you often see this scene?

Li Jiulin: Every day! These people are so concerned (Bird's Nest) that you don't do your work well and don't build the nest. It makes no sense.

Reporter: We imagine that you work every day, walk into the bird's nest, and stand in the middle of the field. Then there are many workers around.

Li Jiulin: (laughs) It may not be what you think. We don't just go to the middle of the venue to see how well everyone is doing. Every day we focus on the part of concern, such as today's attention to the stone ground, the focus on the ground pavement; if you pay attention to interior decoration, we must go to the three-fourth floor of the restaurant and the quality of the decoration; if you look at the film, you have to Climb to the steel structure.

Reporter: Do you enter the bird's nest at least once a day and do you feel the same every time?

Li Jiulin: Every day is different because the bird's nest changes every day. Thousands of items are being constructed every day. This is the kind of thing that came out. That came out. For example, this piece of concrete was originally a concrete wall. Now it is finished; the original ground was piece of land and it is now green; the original film was not stretched and it is now stretched. Especially in the previous period, the feeling was even more obvious. It was the end of a lot of work. The scaffolding of the nest fell and the facade appeared! Once the membrane is in place, there is a cover on the nest! A stone floor shop, the landscape came out! Now that the details have been revised, this feeling is not great.

Reporter: What position does the Bird's Nest occupy in your work and life?

Li Jiulin: The work of the Bird's Nest is a long period of time. The project is indeed challenging, and the individual's hard work, invisible, is also integrated into the work. Sometimes I go home and talk about the bird's nest. My wife told me about it. The standby screens on mobile phones are nests. Occasionally stroll back to the street, see the Bird's Nest model in the Olympic licensed merchandise store, there is a sense of intimacy.

It is indeed a matter of feelings. It does not mean that only one job is done. It has nothing to do with me. Now it is emotional. If someone hears that the bird's nest is “strange” and “unsightful”, it will not be a taste in my heart. .

Reporter: What was the most touching thing in these three or four years?

Li Jiulin: There are probably too many things that are stressful. Having experienced this entire project, it is like a vigorous battle. It is not so easily moved. Frequently asked, to what extent is the excitement after unloading? Cried? I said, ah? There is no such feeling. Someone asked again, saying that the uninstallation wasn't loud? I said, too! It's broken, so calm and calm is called success.

Reporter: Will the Bird's Nest be your pinnacle?

Li Jiulin: This is the case. However, according to the development of China, we still have hope. Maybe there will be better projects in the country that we need to do.
