In the first ten months, the total power supply in Guangzhou was 43.1 billion kwh, an increase of 5.24% year-on-year.
However, in the long run, the development of electricity must have a more advanced planning than the economy in order to meet the needs of social development. Lu Yanchang, chairman of the China Electrical Engineering Society, said that as of the end of 2007, China’s total installed capacity of power generation exceeded 700 million kilowatts. It is estimated that by 2010, the total installed capacity of power generation will reach 900 million kilowatts, and by 2015 it will reach 1.3 billion kilowatts.
At present, in order to further expand domestic demand and promote economic growth, China’s urban power grid construction is accelerating its development. It is understood that the State Grid will allocate 12 billion yuan in 2008 to invest in the construction of power grids and rural power grids in the central and western cities. In 2008, China Southern Power Grid will ensure the completion of a new 4.05 billion yuan investment in construction projects and plans to initially plan for the next two years each year. About 30 billion yuan of new investment is used for urban network reconstruction and improvement of rural power grids.
Experts believe that in the current socio-economic situation, the renewable energy industry faces an opportunity for development. Shi Lishan, deputy director of the New Energy Division of the National Energy Administration, said that according to current mining and consumption rates, oil, natural gas, and coal can only be exploited for decades, while renewable energy such as water, wind, and solar energy will not be reduced because of use.
